Hello

Tamara Houston is a Clinical Social Worker who owns a mental health practice and works as a private practice consultant. As a Certified Grief Specialist, Tamara deeply appreciates the intricacies of navigating the grief journey. Initially, Tamara developed a tool for her private practice clients. Still, this project evolved into a larger initiative that includes a grief card deck and journal, a monthly grief table talk, and a podcast she has now introduced to the world.

My Story

While in graduate school, I experienced the death of three family members within months of each other. Observing how others worked through grief, I was intrigued by end-of-life care and began exploring the meaning of life and trying to find a greater purpose.  I knew that I didn't want to leave this life and not make things better in my little corner of the world. Unfortunately, I didn't recognize the significance of those family deaths because life seemed to go on for me, and I didn't have time to grieve, at least, I thought.  However, I later realized I was impacted deeply and did what many others do with hard feelings; I repressed, ignored, and moved on with a gaping hole in my heart.

Shortly after graduate school, I started a career in hospice, where I spent eight years learning about myself and observing the delicateness of life.  One day, someone would be present in this world, engaging in conversation living, and the next day, their name was on the hospice status board, indicating they had died sometime between when I left work and returned the next day.  This experience changed me!  I learned a lot about myself and began to appreciate all that comes with caring for someone as they bid adieu to this life.

My ultimate hope is that Healing Through Time™ will spark conversation and that we will begin to recognize fully that grief and loss extend beyond the death of a person.  We lose daily, which makes life even more precious to me.  As we maneuver grief and loss, the challenge for each of us is to redirect our focus from the time being the great healer to what we will do between the tics of time.  That is where true healing takes place.  Thank you for your support and encouragement!
